Description

There are six headstones in a line located in the churchyard, starting 1 meter south of the south-west corner of the transept of the Church of St Michael and All Angels. These headstones date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are made of stone.

The northernmost headstone belongs to Thomas Pound, who died in 1760. It features a cambered top with slight scroll shaping, low relief strapwork carving at the head, and good lettering with some copperplate scrolling. The next headstone to the south is unidentified; it has a cambered head and low relief carving, but the inscription has weathered away.

The third headstone has an ogee top and a deep rectangular recess on its face, with the initials "M E" in block capitals in relief. The fourth headstone is made of thick stone, has a chamfered back, and an elliptical top that projects as a hood at the front. Its face is recessed with a rosette at the top, and while the inscription is weathered, it has the date 1680 on the back.

The fifth headstone features a gabled top with a moulded surround framing an oval panel, which has winged heads above on each side forming a pediment that frames a stylized tree of life. The inscription is weathered, and the date is noted as 170-. The sixth headstone has an elliptical head with a winged cherub's head at the top, above a deep recess, and its inscription is also weathered.

This row of headstones represents some of the best surviving examples of 17th and 18th-century headstones in the churchyard.
