Description
The war memorial located in the north churchyard of the Church of St Andrew is a cross dating from around 1920, attributed to the architect Sir Ninian Comper. It is made of sandstone and features tall octagonal columns designed to resemble a crown post, complete with roll moulding and a crown cap. Above the columns is a carved crucifix facing west, and on the reverse side is a figure of the Virgin Mary. The front of the shaft has three sides, each depicting symbols: St Andrew's Cross, a fleur-de-lys representing St Mary, and an anchor for St Nicholas, reflecting the parish's triple nomenclature as it was expanded around 1700. The memorial stands on a square base that is inscribed with the names of casualties on all four sides and is supported by three deep octagonal steps.
