Description

The gates and piers with railings at the west end of the Church of St Mary Magdalene were constructed in the second half of the 19th century. The gatepiers, made of ashlar, feature a pinnacle and a band of crenellation on each. In the center, there are double wrought-iron gates adorned with scrollwork above and multi-foiled motifs below the crossbar. To the left and right, low stone walls are topped with wrought-iron scrolled railings, which are regularly interrupted by square ashlar piers that also have crenellated tops. There is a second set of wrought-iron gates with similar detailing on the left side, and a further gateway without gates is located opposite the south porch. The listed buildings in Church Square, along with the Church of St Mary Magdalene and the listed buildings in Hammet Street, create a significant architectural group.
