Description

Central County Primary School is a Gothic building constructed in 1866, possibly designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, who was involved in the restoration of the parish church located opposite. The school features a two-storey asymmetrical facade with a large gabled range that projects forward on the right side and a second gabled range to the left. The walls are made of rubble with ashlar dressings, and the roofs are tiled.

Two gablets rise above the first-floor windows at the center of the roof, and all gables are topped with stone copings and kneelers. There is a weathered sill band and a buttress in the center of the front, along with a plinth. The facade includes three windows on the left and three large windows in the gabled range on the right. The center first-floor windows and the large window feature pointed arches, stone mullions, and transoms, with plate tracery of three and five lights grouped under cusped oculi. The remaining windows are square-headed, consisting of five and four lights with relieving arches. The coping of the right gable slopes down low at the center, ending above a small pointed doorway that has a projecting stone hood supported by brackets.

This building is part of an important group that includes all the listed buildings in Church Square, along with the Church of St Mary Magdalene and the listed buildings in Hammet Street.
