Description
The churchyard walls, piers, and gates of the Church of St Mary Magdalene date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The gate piers are made of ashlar stone and feature a moulded plinth and capping, topped with ball finials. The double iron gates have five horizontal bars, with the top bar curved to form a segment. The lower four bars are arranged in pairs and include inset bands of diagonal panelling, with vertical rails that terminate at two different horizontal levels. A semi-circular bar overthrow with scroll decoration supports a 19th-century quadrangular lamp with cresting. The stone rubble wall encloses the churchyard on all sides, with the wall on the south side being lower and topped with ashlar coping. The Church of St Mary Magdalene, along with the churchyard walls, piers, gates, Lattice House, Garden Wall and piers to Lattice House, Middle House, and Raleigh Lodge, form a group with the gates at the entrance to Sherborne Castle in Sherborne Rural District.
