Description
Beech Cottage and garden gate, located on Oborne Road, dates from around the late 18th century to early 19th century. The building consists of two parallel ranges made of stone rubble, with the front range likely dating from the earlier period and the rear range being later. It features a slate roof and a colourwashed cement rendered entrance front that is positioned at right angles to the road. The roof is covered with plain tiles.
The cottage has two windows on the upper floor, one at each end, and on the ground floor, there are two windows and a door to the left. The windows are sash style with intact glazing bars. The doorway is topped with a recent hood supported by shaped brackets and features a six-panelled door, with the top two panels being glazed and ledged reveals. The gable end facing the road has a three-light leaded attic casement above.
In front of the path leading to the main entrance, there is a wrought iron gate that has arrow-shaped finials on the lower rails and a curvilinear pattern above, with spear-headed finials on the topmost horizontal rail.
Beech Cottage and its garden gate, along with the north-west boundary wall to Beech Cottage, Castle Farmhouse, the boundary wall to the south-west of Castle Farmhouse, and several other outbuildings and walls in the vicinity, form a group with the outhouses to Castle Farm and the enclosing wall on the north-east side of Oborne Road.
