Description

Raleigh Lodge is a 17th-century building located on Castleton Road. It is part of a block that includes the adjoining Middle House, with the left two bays featuring a slightly higher roofline. The building has a stone slate roof and two gabled dormers with lead-glazed casements. It features five and three-light stone mullioned windows, with hood moulds on the ground floor windows and transoms above. The gable end facing Castle Park displays a cartouche with a carved fleur-de-lys. The doorway on this side is modern but designed in a Tudor style. There are two window bays on this side and a lower wing at the back. Raleigh Lodge was formerly an inn. It is part of a group that includes the Church of St Mary Magdalene, churchyard walls, piers and gates, Lattice House, the garden wall and piers to Lattice House, and Middle House, all of which are located near the gates at the entrance to Sherborne Castle in Sherborne Rural District.
