Description

The Tithe Barn, located 8 metres west of The Rectory in West Camel, is a structure likely dating from the 15th century. It is built from local stone, primarily in random courses, and features a roof covered with double Roman clay tiles between coped gables that have eroded finials. The barn consists of six bays and has a projecting east porch at the fourth bay. Inside, it has raised cruck trusses with double collars and pairs of renewed purlins on each slope, which were formerly windbraced.

The barn has angled offset buttresses at the corners of the main building and low offset buttresses for each bay, with cruciform slit windows positioned between them. There is a large doorway in the east porch that is mirrored by another doorway in the opposite wall. The gables have an offset at the eaves level and central offset buttresses, featuring high slits and putlog holes. The northern two bays have been adapted into a stable with a loft above. There is a blocked slightly ogee arch in the south wall of the porch.

This barn is likely associated with the Grange connected to Muchelney Abbey and forms an impressive grouping with The Rectory and the Dovecote.
