Description

Higher Stone Head is a house that dates back to around 1690, though it may be older. It is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and has two tall storeys. The house features an end-lobby entry design with two units at the front and a central outshut at the rear.

On the ground floor, there are two double chamfered mullion and transom windows; one was originally a five-light window but has been altered to include a sash in the center, losing its side transoms, while the other remains intact with four lights. A continuous hoodmould above these windows has stops carved in the shapes of the letters I and P. There is an enclosed gabled porch at the left end of the house. Above the doorway, there are said to be the initials IP and WP (for Pickles) along with the date 1690, although some sources suggest the date could be 1630. There is another doorway on the right side.

Above the ground floor, there are three double chamfered mullion windows with two, three, and three lights respectively. The house has two chimneys, one located on the left gable. At the rear, the outshut features a small round-headed light, and there are additional windows with chamfered surrounds. This house and Lower Stone Head appear to have been built by the same family, if not by the same individual.
