COWLING STONE HEAD LANE Stone Head (formerly listed as Higher Stone Head)

GV II

House, said to 1690, but may be earlier. Rubble with stone slate roof. Two tall storeys. An end-lobby entry house of 2 units at front with central outshut at rear. The ground-floor has 2 double chamfered mullion and transom windows, one formerly of 5 lights but with the central cross removed to insert a sash and no side transoms, the other of 4 lights and intact. A continuous hoodmould has stops carved as the letters I and P. Porch, enclosed and gabled, at left hand end. Over doorway are said to be the initials IP and WP (for Pickles) and the date 1690, though 1630 has been described instead. Another doorway at right. Above are 3 double chamfered mullion windows of 2, 3 and 3 lights. Two chimneys, one on left gable. At rear the outshut has a small round-headed light and there are some windows with chamfered surrounds. This house and Lower Stone Head (qv) appear to have been built by the same family, if not the same man. (N.Y.C.V.B.S.G. under Pickells Farm).
