Description

Crocus Cottage is a house located in Lower Brixham, likely dating from the 18th century, with an early 20th-century doorcase. The building features solid roughcast walls, with a particularly thick front wall, and a slated roof. There is a large rendered chimney on the left gable wall. The house is two storeys high with a garret and is two windows wide.

The central round-arched doorway is framed by an early 20th-century panelled door, which has panelled pilasters and a semicircular hoodmould, along with panelled reveals. Above the door is a narrow, rectangular five-paned fanlight containing coloured glass, and above that is what appears to be an earlier, painted-over cobweb fanlight. The windows are box-framed sashes, with eight over eight panes on the ground storey and six over six panes above. The building has a deep, flat eaves-cornice and two hipped dormers with slate-hung sides. The left dormer features 19th-century eight-paned sashes, while the right dormer has a late 20th-century nine-paned fixed sash; both dormers are topped with scroll-finials, which seem to be made of metal.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is known that the front room has panelled shutters. Pring's Court, where Crocus Cottage is located, contains the best-preserved group of listed buildings in Lower Brixham.
