Description

House. The property dates to 1691, as indicated by inscriptions ("IMS 1691") on the door and porch lintels, although it has 19th and 20th-century additions. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a graduated stone slate roof. The building has a 3-unit double-depth plan, with 4 bays across two storeys. It features quoins and a projecting plinth. A single-storey porch has a moulded door surround, a segmental-arched lintel with enriched spandrels, a date inscription above, and a parapet that forms a simple, classically inspired entablature. Three ground-floor windows have 6 lights, with double-chamfered mullions and hood moulds. The first floor has 4, 4, 2, and 4-light chamfered windows. Many of the windows retain original leaded lights and vertical iron bars. The gables are coped with kneelers, and the chimneys have moulded bands. Mullioned windows (2, 3, and 4-light) and later sash windows are found on the sides and rear. Later additions were made to the left side, a later porch to the right, and a single-story early 18th-century addition to the rear right. Inside, the kitchen (rear right room) contains a gable-end door made of studded oak with the initials "IS" carved on it. This room is separated by a plank and muntin screen, and includes a 17th-century well cupboard with carved doors and butterfly hinges, and a bolection-moulded fireplace surround with a coved cornice mantel. A first-floor cupboard has H-hinges and the inscription "MS 1692" carved at the top. The house retains a wealth of original features and the double-depth plan suggests it is an early example of yeoman farmer housing.
