Description
Rochdale Canal Lock No. 45 and Pikehouse Bridge is a lock and tailbridge built between 1794 and 1798, designed by engineer William Jessop. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features double upper gates, along with recesses for two sets of lower gates, although none of the lower gates currently exist and only one was ever installed. The tailbridge is located to the south of the lock. The winding gear is still present, and the lock walls display stonemason's marks. The east retaining wall was repaired in the 19th century. The bridge is segmental-arched, with a stone band, round-topped copings, and square terminating piers. A wall descends to the pound level and includes steps for boatmen.
