Description
Lock No. 46 and Windy Bank Bridge on the Rochdale Canal were built between 1794 and 1798, designed by engineer William Jessop. The structure is made of hammer-dressed stone and features double upper gates, with recesses for two sets of lower gates that no longer exist, and a tailbridge attached to the south. The winding gear is still present, and the lock walls display stonemason's marks. The elliptical-arched tail bridge has a stone band and parapet walls made of large vertically set stones. A retaining wall slopes down to the lower level and includes steps for boatmen. The bridge is likely from a later date, around 1840.
