Description
The Council School, located at No 123 Longwestgate, is an early 19th-century large house that stands three storeys tall with a basement, constructed of white brick. It features a first-floor sill course and a rebuilt parapet, topped with a gable end slate roof. The building has five symmetrical windows, although the ones on the right side at the first and ground floors have been altered and lowered. The remaining windows are recessed sashes with intact glazing bars, adorned with flat stucco arches.
The central entrance boasts a three-panel door set in a panelled reveal and soffit, topped by a semi-circular fanlight. A large stucco porch enhances the entrance, supported by two pairs of wall pilasters and two pairs of columns with Ionic capitals, along with an entablature. The area is enclosed by early 15th-century cast iron spearhead railings, which feature a band of linked circles and standards with similar panels. To the left, there is a late 19th-century school block made of brick and stone, showcasing Gothic details and a pyramid finial capped roof on its square tower.
Nos 119 to 135 Longwestgate form a cohesive group with this building.
