Description

The structure is a folly or grotto known as Lady's Cave or Picnic Bower, built in the late 18th to early 19th century. It features red brick, limestone rubble, and ashlar with a stone slate roof. The building is single storey and consists of three bays. On the southeast side, there is a central round-arched opening with a pair of low wrought-iron gates topped with fleur-de-lis finials. There are flanking pairs of round-arched niches, with the inner pair being wider than the outer. Ashlar bands are present below the niches and at the impost level, as well as above the accentuated rusticated voussoirs of the central arch and niches. An entablature above consists of alternating rusticated panels and groups of cast-iron balusters, although the central portion above the arch is destroyed. The roof is single pitch.

At the rear, the building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond. The left and right returns feature round-headed window openings with rusticated voussoirs. Inside, the walls are lined with brick, and there is a stone flag floor. The ceiling is framed in wood and secured with iron bolts to the roof structure above.
