Description

The Folly at Oakville is an early 19th-century folly constructed from salvaged materials, including burnt kiln brick, red and gault brick, reused ashlar, ecclesiastical carving, terracotta, and Coade stone ornament. The building has a square plan and stands two storeys tall. The north side features a plank door set under a semi-circular arch made of burnt brick voussoirs, topped with a Coade stone head as a keyblock. There are arched niches on either side of the door. A flush floor band at the first floor consists of irregular ashlar blocks. The first floor is illuminated by a single-light arched casement with leaded glazing, flanked by arched niches containing carved ecclesiastical figures, with each opening also having Coade stone heads as keyblocks. The building is topped with a crenellated parapet. The south side has two arched windows on the first floor, each fitted with single-light casements with leaded glazing. The west side features one similar window on each floor, both accompanied by arched niches on either side. The east side has no openings. Inside, a ladder staircase leads to the first floor, which is lined with full-height plank panelling and has three windows with coloured glass, a timber ceiling, and a four-panelled door leading from the staircase. This unusual folly incorporates a wide range of materials. The name 'Oakville' is not of special interest.
