Description
The bridge over the path to the Pleasure Grounds at Allerton Park dates from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of rough hewn rock with ashlar dressings and red brick. The south-west front facing the pleasure grounds features a large round archway with a prominent keystone and an ashlar impost band, topped with an ashlar coped parapet. This archway is currently blocked. On either side of the archway are curved ramped walls, also with ashlar coping, which end in low square piers. The north-east front facing the house has a similar archway, though it is now largely overgrown with ivy and also blocked. Inside, there is a round arched brick tunnel that connects the two facades. The bridge was designed to allow visitors to pass beneath the main path to the home farm on their way to the pleasure grounds, avoiding the dirt and noise of the public road.
