Description

The icehouse at Allerton Park dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of gritstone and brick. It features a large mound with a retaining wall approximately 8 metres long on the north side, which has a central entrance leading to the underground chamber. The entrance is fitted with a 19th-century segmental-headed plank door that is surrounded by coursed, rock-dressed stone. The flanking wall consists of large, uncoursed boulders topped with ashlar coping. Inside, there is a narrow brick-lined passage that leads down a flight of five steps to a deep circular brick-lined pit with a domed roof.
