Description

The building at the corner frontage of No 55 Market Place, which includes the Millgate corner frontage, dates from the mid-18th century. It is three storeys high and constructed of red brick, featuring rusticated quoins. The roof is made of Welsh slate and is hipped to the left. The facade has five windows without glazing bars, framed in moulded stone, and is topped with a stone eaves cornice. The modern ground floor bank front is made of projecting ashlar.

On the Millgate elevation, there are three windows, with the ground floor windows arranged irregularly. This elevation also has rusticated quoins, with one section rendered. The moulded stone doorcase features shaped jambs, a pulvinated frieze with a central panel, and a moulded cornice. The door consists of six panels. The left-hand section is three storeys tall with two hung sash windows that have glazing bars, along with an 18th-century bay window also featuring glazing bars. There is a wall with a round-headed carriage arch that is rusticated, complete with a keystone and a chamfered reveal for a plain door. All the listed buildings in Market Place (South Side) are part of a group.
