Description

Nos 37 and 39 on Gallowtree Gate feature a rear elevation facing the Market Place. The right-hand section, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, is built of red brick with stone dressings and stands five storeys tall with five windows. The ground floor has been modernized, while the upper floors have sash windows without glazing bars. The first and second floor windows are separated by stone Tuscan pilasters, with the end pilasters being flat. The third floor windows are set in moulded architraves with round heads, featuring relief moulding in the tympanum. The fourth floor has three windows in moulded architraves, with a stone relief coat of arms positioned between them, topped by an entablature with a modillion cornice.

The left-hand section, also from the late 19th century, is made of red brick with stone dressings and has four storeys with seven windows. The ground floor is modern, while the first floor features segmental arches with a continuous drip mould, moulded brick jambs, and shouldered stone transoms, along with a band at the second floor level. The second floor windows have stone shouldered lintels with arched heads that contain carved circular panels, moulded brick jambs, and moulded stone sills. Above this, there is a terracotta relief band at the third floor level. The third floor windows are segmental arch windows, with the end windows being smaller and featuring shouldered arches and stone panels above in the parapet. The entire ground floor is occupied by modern shop fronts with large fascias. This building is included for its group value with Nos 35 and other listed buildings on the east side of the Market Place, which are of local interest.
