Description
1 The Market Place is a Grade II* listed timber-framed building, likely dating from the 17th century, which was refronted in the 18th century. It stands three storeys tall with an attic and features one window facing east and three windows facing south, along with a dormer on the east front. The building is currently fronted with painted mathematical tiles, although timber framing is visible at the corners and bays. The ground floor has been modified for a shop front, but the second floor still overhangs on both fronts, supported by a bressumer and brackets. The eaves cornice is an 18th-century modification, and the roof is steeply pitched and hipped, covered in tiles.
The east front has one bay of five lights, while the south front has two bays of five lights each on the first and second floors, which are original to the building. These windows have wooden mullions and transoms, with the second-floor windows featuring small modern square leaded panes. The west window on the first floor of No 123 retains its original glazing. The south front includes an additional smaller bay at the west end of the first floor, also with small square leaded panes and green glass. This bay and the next to the east have a cove below the window.
Both fronts showcase a fine 18th-century shop front that spans the entire width of the premises, featuring a curved corner. The shop front of No 1 Market Place does not have glazing bars, but it includes a pair of glazed double doors with ornamental panes. In contrast, No 123 West Street retains its glazing bars in the shop window and has simpler glazed doors. The listed buildings in the Market Place form a group, including Nos 1 and 2, 4 to 7 (consecutive), and No 7A, which are grouped with Nos 1 to 11 (consecutive) and 11A Court Street.
