Description
The Bear Inn Public House is a late Victorian building located in the Market Place. It features a red brick exterior with stone dressings and has a hipped clay tiled roof. The structure is two storeys high, with two stone-framed cross casements on the first floor and one three-light window below, next to a door that has a tall oblong fanlight in a stone surround.
Inside, there are two separate timber-framed buildings, with the earlier one dating back to the medieval period located towards the front. This section rests on a deep flint-walled basement that includes stone dressings and part of a pointed-arched doorway. A brick barrel-vaulted storage area has been added, likely in the early 18th century. Some beams are visible in the upper part of the house. The back building is L-shaped and probably dates from the 16th century. Although the roof is inaccessible, it features jowled posts and arched braces. A large chimney stack with an inglenook appears to have been inserted, and the main beam of the back parlour runs into the brickwork. The interior also includes some attractive Victorian painted glass doors.
