Description
Nos 5 and 6 on The Market Place are 15th century, possibly earlier, timber-framed houses built around an internal courtyard. The east fronts are plastered and face the Market Place. No 5 is three storeys high with one window, while No 6 is two storeys with two windows. Both buildings feature three gables and have crown post roofs covered with tiles. The ground floor is underbuilt and consists of early 19th century shop fronts. The shop front of No 5 is slightly curved with reeded pilasters and a cornice above, but lacks glazing bars. No 6 has two smaller windows with their glazing bars intact, a glazed double door between them, and a cornice above. Between the southernmost shop window of No 6 and that of No 5 is a medieval pointed doorway with an oak door that has a keystone featuring the figure of a horse and the word "Invicta." No 5 also has a small 18th century bay window on the first floor. No 6 contains early 17th century windows that have lost their lead glazing and Georgian shop fittings. Additionally, wall paintings have been discovered in a first-storey room at the rear of No 6, including five late 16th century painted panels with written inscriptions behind each panel on the wall. All the listed buildings in The Market Place form a group, which includes Nos 1 and 2, 4 to 7 consecutively, and No 7A, as well as Nos 1 to 11 consecutively and 11A on Court Street.
