Description

This milepost, located on the north side of Skipton Road in Hampsthwaite, dates from the mid-19th century. It features a cast-iron plate mounted on a gritstone block, which is partly buried. The milepost is triangular in shape with a rounded head and stands approximately 80 centimetres high. The inscriptions on the milepost include "SKIPTON & KNARESBOROUGH ROAD / HAMPSTHWATTE" at the top, "HARROGATE 4 MILES / KNARESBORO' 6 3/4 MILES" on the left face, and "SKIPTON 18 MILES" on the right face. The iron plate is secured to the gritstone block with two iron bolts through the head.
