Description
This milepost, dating from the early to mid-19th century, is made of cast iron and gritstone. It has a triangular section with a rounded top and stands approximately 1 metre high. The inscriptions on the milepost indicate the directions: at the top, it reads 'KNARESBOROUGH AND GREEN HAMMERTON ROAD'; on the left face, it states 'KNARESBOROUGH 4 MILES'; and on the right face, it notes 'GREEN HAMMERTON 4 MILES'. The cast-iron plate is secured to the gritstone support by two bolts at the top. This section of the York-Boroughbridge Road was established as a turnpike in 1752, replacing an older, winding route through Ferrensby, Arkendale, and Whixley. A turnpike bar was located at Flaxby, and further road improvements occurred in the Harrogate and Knaresborough area during the 1820s and 1830s.
