Description
Hookstone Garth is a house dated 1692, though it may have earlier origins. It is built of coursed gritstone rubble and has a grey slate roof. The house is two storeys high and consists of four bays with an end lobby-entry plan. It features quoins and has a blocked original door on the far right, which now contains a 2-light window. The door's former location has cyma-moulded jambs and a shallow triangular soffit to the lintel, adorned with incised scrolls in the spandrels and a recessed panel displaying the letters "GSB 1692" in relief.
There is an inserted door in the second bay, and the windows throughout are recessed chamfered mullion types with varying details. The ground-floor windows in bays one and three are three-light, short, and deeply recessed. The first floor has a three-light window in bay one with a deep bolection moulded architrave, a two-light window above the inserted door, and a three-light window in bay three that is only slightly recessed with segmental-headed lights. Bay four on the first floor features a single-light window with a deep architrave similar to that in bay one. A continuous dripmould at the first-floor level steps up over the doorways.
The house has a corniced stack on the left and a banded stack on the right. At the rear, the ground floor includes a rectangular chamfered window, paired segmental-headed lights, and an inserted two-light window. On the first floor, the left side has a three-light window in an architrave, with the central light being segmental-headed. The varied window styles suggest a long and significant structural history. The interior was not inspected during the resurvey.
