Description

The Grange and attached barn is a house and barn dating from the mid to late 17th century, with restoration carried out in the mid 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The house is two stories high with a two-bay lobby-entry plan and an additional bay to the left, while the barn has three bays. The house has quoins on the left side and the barn also features quoins.

The earliest part of the house has a central 20th-century board door set in a doorcase with moulded quoined jambs and a triangular soffit above a large lintel. This door is flanked by three-light recessed chamfered mullion windows on both the ground and first floors, although one mullion has been removed from each ground-floor window. A stepped continuous hoodmould runs at the first-floor level, and there is a blocked circular window at the center of the first floor. The left bay has a 20th-century board door in an alternate quoined surround, with a two-light recessed chamfered mullion window to the left (also with the mullion removed) and a similar window above on the first floor. The left side features a bulbous kneeler and gable coping, a large corniced stack opposite the main entrance, and a smaller stack at the left gable.

Attached to the right of the house is the barn, which has quoined jambs to the byre door on the left and a 20th-century sliding door for the cart entrance, which also has quoins on the left jamb. There is an added range at a right angle to the barn on the right, but this is not of special interest. The rear of the barn, facing the road, has a fine central board door with moulded quoined jambs and a triangular soffit above the lintel. The house features a recessed chamfered window at the center of the ground floor, with the remaining windows being 19th and 20th-century insertions. Although the interior was not inspected during the resurvey, it has been reported to contain a fine moulded segmental-arched fireplace. The barn's roof trusses are reused from a timber-framed structure.
