Description

A row of 18th-century cottages, some with 20th-century shop windows, is located on the south side of St James’s Square, Boroughbridge. The buildings are constructed of brick, with a rendered finish, and feature dentilled eaves and a pantile roof. They comprise a total of nine first-floor sash windows, four of which retain glazing bars, particularly those associated with the Northern Rock Building Society and the Fountain House Restaurant. The ground floors have largely been altered recently, with the exception of the Secondhand Books premises, which retains a square bay window with a modillion cornice, a panelled door with an oblong fanlight, and a sash window. The Flare Boutique retains one original sash window on its ground floor. The cottages are of group value due to their prominent position within the square.
