Description

A row of four cottages dating from the early 19th century, located on The Square in Kilkhampton. Numbers 31 and 34 have historically operated as shops. The cottages are constructed of rendered and colourwashed material with slate roofs and glazed ridge tiles. Brick chimneys are present, with the left gable end chimney built from local brick. The buildings follow a single-depth plan.

The row presents an 8-window front, with variations in window types between the properties. Number 31 features a 2-light timber casement window above a 20th-century door, and a cart entrance with timber doors. The first-floor windows are similar timber casements. Number 32 incorporates a shop front on the ground floor on the left side, alongside a 12-pane shop window and a 2-light timber casement to the right. The first floor windows are irregularly spaced 2-light timber casements. Number 33 has a door with a rectangular fanlight, and 2-light timber casements on both the ground and first floors. Number 34 retains a 4-panel door with a slated pent roof extending over the ground floor right bay window, which was formerly used for shop display. The interiors and rear of the properties were not inspected. Number 34 is included on the list for group value, relating to the surrounding context.
