Description

The Old Cartaret Arms is a house, which at one time operated as a public house, with a core dating back to the 17th century and later alterations in the 20th century. The front is constructed of slatestone rubble, originally pebbledashed, with a slate roof. The roof is hipped at the right end and has a half-gable over the cart entrance to the right, along with a brick chimney at the left end.

The original layout included a single depth, a through passage, and a service room to the rear, alongside a malthouse. The malthouse was largely demolished in 1984, and a lean-to extension with an asbestos slate roof was subsequently added to the rear, occupying the area of the former malthouse. The front of the building has a two-story, three-and-a-half-window range, with a flat-roofed, centrally-positioned glazed porch added in the 20th century. The windows on the street facade are 2-light casements, each with 8 panes. A ground-floor room, formerly used as a bar, contains an oak pub bench fixed to the wall of the through passage. Timber doors provide access to the cart entrance. The house occupies an important position in the square, next to the Old Poorhouse, and is included on the list for group value with that building.
