Description

Outbuilding, dating from around 1600, originally a house. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble, with some cob on the rear wall, and has a corrugated iron gabled roof. A stone stack with a truncated shaft of local brick is present, alongside gable end chimneys of brick. The original design was a cross passage plan; a hall is located to the right of the passage, with a smaller service room to the left. A 20th-century lean-to with a galvanised iron roof adjoins the front wall. A 6-panel door, recessed above a middle rail and flush below, is found to the left of the front lateral stack. A pair of 8-pane timber sash windows is positioned to the left of the door. There is a further entrance to the right of the stack. First-floor windows include three 2-light casements; one has 6 panes per light, while the others have 2 and 8 panes per light. The remains of a plank and muntin screen are visible to the left of the passage, with a morticed doorhead leading into the service room at the far end. The hall features a large cross beam with pyramid stops. A later stair has been boxed in at the end of the hall. The roof structure comprises 3 pairs of raised crucks, with cambered collars mortised into the blades, and 2 tiers of threaded purlins, with a diagonally set ridge. A first-floor room at the rear right has a partly blocked original timber mullioned window with 2 round-headed lights, featuring deep chamfers on the outside head and jambs. The plan is illustrated in Eric Mercer’s English Vernacular Houses, HMSO, 1979, page 144.
