Nos 16 And 18, With Railings Fronting No 18

This is a pair of late 18th-century houses, originally two separate properties, now used as a dental surgery and electricity showroom with accommodation above. The buildings are located on Knaresborough High Street and were initially listed in 1952, with No. 18 having been listed previously.

The houses are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a Westmorland slate roof. They are three storeys high and each has three bays. No. 18, on the left, has a limestone plinth and five quoins to its left side. It features a half-glazed door with a traceried overlight, set within a wooden doorcase. This doorcase has reeded pilasters and consoles supporting a moulded cornice, which extends over a bow window with sash windows and glazing bars. A similar bow window is located on the first floor, built on bowed brickwork. The second floor has a 20th-century sash window with an incised wedge lintel and projecting sill. No. 16, on the right, has a 20th-century shop front on the ground floor, and a large fixed window above, incorporating an engraved picture of a railway viaduct and river. The second floor has a 20-pane sash window with an incised wedge lintel and projecting sill. A blind window, with matching sills and lintels, is positioned between the two houses on the first and second floors. Wooden gutter brackets are present, and a rendered end stack projects forwards from the ridge on the left side. On the right return, a cast lead rainwater head and downpipe remain above ground-floor level. The forecourt has cast-iron railings with fleur de lis finials.
