Description

Nos 7 and 8 South Parade are a pair of houses, now used as offices, dating from the late 18th century with later alterations. They are constructed of red brick, with No 8 rendered, and feature brick and stone dressings under a slate roof. The buildings stand three storeys tall with attics and consist of three bays in total, sharing a central bay.

Each house has a plinth, and all openings are set slightly forward, leaving short areas of blind brickwork on either side. The central bay features an almost full-height semi-circular headed blind recess with a rubbed brick arch and stone imposts at the lintel level of the first-floor windows. The ground floor has a pair of semi-circular headed doorcases with panelled jambs and reveals, leading to six raised and fielded panelled doors beneath plain fanlights and entablatures supported by moulded consoles with dosserets above.

To either side of the central bay are tripartite bow windows with plate glass sashes, projecting sills, and moulded cornices on shallow brick plinths. The bow window on No 8 (to the right) forms the lower part of a two-storey bow with a similar window above. No 7 features an original full-height tripartite bow window on the first floor, with unequal hung 15 and 5 pane sashes beneath a moulded cornice and a bracketed segmental ironwork balcony. The central bay has a blind semi-circular headed recess with a projecting sill. Above, there are two tripartite plate glass sash windows with projecting sills; the left window is recessed below a segmental brick arch.

No 7 has dentilled eaves, while No 8 has a plain eaves band, both topped with a blocking course. There is a gabled attic dormer on No 7 and brick end stacks. The interior of No 8 retains an original dogleg close string staircase with three flights, featuring unusual balusters with bulb bases and tops, along with central lozenge-shaped knops.
