Description

Number 1 and 2 Regent Terrace are a pair of houses that have been converted into offices. They were built in the early 19th century and have undergone some alterations since then. The buildings are finished in stucco with painted stone dressings and feature a concrete tile roof. They stand three storeys tall, plus a basement and attics, and each house consists of a single bay with a shared central bay, making a total of three bays in the façade.

Designed in the Gothick style, the front of each house has stone steps leading down to a basement well, with a central pair of six-panel doors flanked by canted bays that contain sash windows with glazing bars. A wide plain band runs along the top of the buildings. The front is enclosed by railings featuring alternating arrowhead and fleur-de-lys finials on square bars, which extend to either side of the steps leading to the central doors. The steps are supported by an arched bridge over the basement well.

The pointed doorcases are adorned with moulded timber architraves and continuous ogee hoodmoulds, and the six-panelled doors have plain overlights. On either side of the central bay, there are two-storey canted bays that rise from the basement; the ground floor features plate glass sashes while the first floor has full-height pointed plate glass sashes, all beneath a timber cornice. There is a continuous sill band on the first floor and bracketed iron balconies at the fronts of the canted bays.

A large stepped pointed blind panel is located in the centre of the first floor, above which is a tripartite window with a blind central panel and two narrow side sashes, flanked by plate glass sashes, all beneath returned hoodmoulds. The ground and second floor windows have projecting sills. The buildings are topped with projecting embattled parapets and a mansard roof that features three flat-headed dormers, with the dormers on either side having pointed glazing. The gables are stone-coped, and there are rendered stacks at the ends.
