Description

Number 1 is a house that has been converted into offices, along with its attached railings. It dates from the late 18th century and features a stucco exterior with painted stone dressings and a slate roof. The building is three storeys high and has three bays, with a slightly recessed two-storey single bay to the left.

There is a plinth and steps leading up to a central Venetian doorcase, which includes a six-panel raised and fielded door beneath a stiled semi-circular fanlight with glazing bars. This doorcase is flanked by engaged Tuscan columns and pilasters that support short sections of entablature. The central arch has a moulded architrave, and there are blind panels between the columns and pilasters.

To either side of the doorcase and on the far left, there are Venetian windows with unequal sashes and glazing bars, also supported by pilasters carrying entablatures. All ground floor openings are set in blind semi-circular headed recesses. The first floor has four 12-pane sash windows above a continuous sill band, with the central window above the doorcase set in an architrave with a cornice, also in a blind semi-circular headed recess. Above this, there is a central six-pane sash flanked by narrow inserted windows and plate glass sashes on either side, all with projecting stone sills.

The roof is hipped with end brick stacks, and the left return features blind openings. The front has 18th-century style replacement railings. Number 1 and Number 2 to the left form a pair, although the interior of Number 1 has been significantly altered.
