Description
Hall Cross is a monument built in 1793 by Doncaster Corporation. It is made of ashlar and stands approximately 40 feet high. The monument features two wide circular steps leading up to a deep circular plinth, which has the bases of sawn-off railings at the top of the second step. The structure has a tall octagonal base with a moulded plinth and a coved cornice. Above this, there are three circular steps leading to a tall column that has attached colonnettes at each of its four corners, each with a moulded base and coved cornice. At the top, there is an octagonal pinnacle with a carved wooden finial that is topped by a weathervane. On the north side of the octagonal base, there is an inscription that reads, "This cross was rebuilt by the corporation. 1793. Henry Heaton Esq, Mayor," along with a Latin inscription around the column, located about halfway up. This monument replaced an ancient cross.
