Description

TOWN OF DONCASTER SOUTH PARADE SE 5803 SW (west end)

8/83 Hall Cross 12.6.50 GV II

Monument. 1793 built by Doncaster Corporation. Ashlar. Approximately 40 feet high. Two wide circular steps up to deep circular plinth, bases of sawn off railings to top of second step. Monument has tall octagonal base with moulded plinth and coved cornice. Above three circulars steps up to tall column with attached colonnettes to four corners, each with moulded base and coved cornice. Octagonal pinnacle to top with carved wooden finial topped by weathervane. Inscription to north side of octagonal base 'This cross was rebuilt by the corporation.1793.Henry Heaton Esq, Mayor', also Latin inscription round the column, about half way up. This replaced an ancient cross. Source: 'History of Doncaster' by E Miller 1804.
