Description
The Salutation Hotel is a public house dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, with subsequent alterations. It is constructed of stucco with stone dressings, and has a slate roof. The building is three storeys high and five bays wide, arranged as a 1:3:1 composition. The ground floor features a large segmental archway, rising to one and a half storeys, which passes through the left-hand bay. The main entrance is located in the third bay, consisting of a six-panelled door with a divided overlight, set within a doorcase featuring engaged columns with foliage capitals, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice. To the left of the entrance is a tripartite window with 12 and 4-pane sashes, while the right-hand bay has a matching pair of windows. The upper floors feature full-height sash windows; the three central bays have irregularly hung 15-pane sashes, with 20th-century ironwork balconies on either side, and a tripartite bow window with 15 and 5-pane sashes and a moulded cornice to the right. The second floor has three 6-pane sashes, with a large 9-pane sash set slightly lower over the archway and a tripartite sash window with glazing bars on the right. Ground and second floor windows have projecting sills. A moulded cornice with bracketed gutter runs along the top of the building. Large rendered end and ridge stacks are a prominent feature.
