Description

Nos 8 and 10 South Parade are a pair of houses, now partly used as commercial premises, dating from the late 18th century and altered over time. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a roof made of Welsh slate and pantiles. The buildings rise to three storeys and feature a symmetrical composition with three bays on either side of a recessed central bay that includes a carriageway.

The ground floor has a brick plinth and rusticated ashlar quoins. No 10, located on the left, has a central six-panel door with an overlight that features intersecting-tracery glazing bars, framed by an architrave. Above the door is a fluted frieze with decorative paterae beneath a dentilled pediment. The flanking windows are sash style with glazing bars, projecting stone sills, and rubbed-brick cambered arches that include double keystones. The first-floor windows mirror this design, with a blind central window. The second floor has six-pane sashes in matching openings, also with single keystones, and a blind central window.

No 8, on the right, is similar to No 10 but has a later door and a large shop window inserted on its right side; its upper windows have flush wooden architraves. The central bay of No 8 features a panelled double door beneath a rusticated flat arch with a keystone. The windows above are consistent with the rest, but the second-floor window has a segmental head set beneath the keyed round arch of the central recess. The buildings have a modillioned eaves cornice and a hipped roof, with rendered stacks flanking the centre and brick end stacks; the roof of No 10 has been replaced with Welsh slate.

Inside, No 10 has a dog-leg staircase with square newels and finely-turned balusters leading to a ramped handrail, along with contemporary fireplaces in the front ground-floor rooms.
