Description

Nos 2, 4, and 6 South Parade are a pair of houses that have been converted into commercial premises. They were built in the late 18th century and consist of two separate constructions. The buildings are made of red brick laid in Flemish bond and topped with a pantile roof.

The structure has three storeys and features a total of seven bays, with the right-hand bays being added later. For bays 1 to 3, which correspond to Nos 4 and 6, there is a brick plinth. The central doorway has a renewed panelled door with a plain overlight, all set beneath a rubbed-brick flat arch that includes a double keystone. Flanking this doorway are 16-pane sash windows that have projecting sills and heads similar to the door. The first-floor windows mirror this design but include flush wooden architraves, and there is a Sun fire-insurance plaque over bay 2. The second floor features 8-pane sashes set in matching openings, and there is a modillioned cornice at the eaves.

For bays 4 to 7, which correspond to No 2, bay 4 contains a carriage opening with boarded double doors beneath a rusticated flat arch with a keystone. Bay 5 has an inserted shop window beneath the flat arch of the original window opening, while bay 6 has a doorway with a panelled double door and a 4-pane overlight. The other openings are similar to those in bays 1 to 3, but bay 6 has a blind window on the second floor. The roof is hipped at the left end and features end stacks and a ridge stack to the right of bay 3. The rear of No 2 has an unequally-hung 18-pane sash window for the stair, while the additions to the rear of Nos 4 and 6 are not of special interest.
