Description
Nos. 14 and 16 Market Street are two houses that have been converted into offices. They date from the early 19th century, although there is a rainwater head marked "FSA 1752." The buildings are constructed of Flemish bond brick and feature slate and stone slate roofs. No. 14 is double-depth and one room wide, while No. 16 is also double-depth but has rooms on either side of the door in bay 3. Both houses have three storeys.
They are set on a stone plinth with a moulded eaves cornice. The total number of bays is six, excluding a former carriage entry. The first, second, fourth, and fifth bays have tripartite sash windows with cambered brick arches and stone sills. The first floor features six 12-pane sash windows, and the second floor has six 9-pane sash windows, all with slightly cambered brick arches and stone sills, except for No. 16, which has concrete sills.
Bays 1 and 2 are slightly recessed, and the door in bay 3 has a semi-circular fanlight with cast iron bars and three-quarter Tuscan columns. The door in bay 6 is four-panelled and has fluted pilasters and an overlight under a cambered brick arch. There are large stacks located between Nos. 14 and 16.
