Description

These commercial premises, now restaurants and offices, were built in the 1890s for Sir William Cunliffe Brooks, likely by George Truefitt. The building is constructed of header bond brick with decorative timber framing and a clay tile roof. It comprises five bays with two storeys and an attic, and two bays on Post Office Street. The design is romantic in style yet retains a nearly symmetrical composition. Features include a stone plinth, stone bands, a decorative timber-framed eaves band, and a mansard roof with three chimneys. A central recess provides entrances to 2A and 4A, with a balcony above. Large shop fronts are present on either side, with two- and three-light mullion and transom windows above. These upper windows have decorative bargeboards, finials, timber-framed gables, and leaded lights (except for those on the ground floor). The facade curves gracefully into Post Office Street, and a weather vane on the roof bears the initials of the patron. The building is intended to complement other buildings by Cunliffe Brooks, including Lloyds Bank and Nos. 1 and 3 Market Street.
