Description

Nos. 2, 4, 6 and the right three bays of eight on Kingsway in Altrincham are shops and offices built in 1870. The building is constructed of red sandstone, featuring a rock-faced and ashlar finish, with a slate roof and a brick rear. It has 11 bays and stands three storeys tall, with shops on the ground floor and offices above, showcasing a Victorian Gothic style.

Notable architectural features include an enriched sill band on the first floor and a coped modillion eaves parapet. The ground floor was originally arcaded and had shop fronts with barley sugar Y-tracery, although this detail now only remains on bay 6. Bays 1, 2, and 3 have been significantly re-faced in brick. The arcade columns feature moulded bases and capitals, with pilasters that separate bays 3 and 4, and 8 and 9, extending up the entire building.

On the first floor, each set of three bays contains four lancet windows, with the central two being coupled and adorned with plate tracery, all under hoodmoulds with enriched stops. The second floor windows follow a similar design, featuring shouldered heads and paired windows beneath corbelled gablets that break through the eaves parapet.
