Description
Suffolk House, now divided into three separate houses, was built around 1860. It is located on the east side of Suffolk Road, Altrincham, and incorporates Holmacre and Bradgate, which are on Harrington Road. The house is constructed of yellow and pink brick, creating a polychromatic effect, with a slate roof. It is a large, two-story building, plus basement and attic, designed in an Italianate style, with a slightly later wing added to the east. Some 20th-century alterations have been made, but these are in keeping with the original design.
The main house has six bays, with a three-bay addition. Features include a projecting brick plinth, stone bands, striated patterned brickwork, zig-zag brickwork, timber bracketed eaves, hipped roofs, and decorative chimney stacks. A two-story canted bay window extends across the first three bays. An elaborate timber porch is located in bay five. Bays five and six are set back but emphasized by a tall mansard roof with a dormer window. All windows are sash windows with semicircular, segmental, or flat arched heads, framed by coloured brick. The window jambs use ovolo-moulded bricks and, in some cases, form pilasters with moulded stone capitals. Several first-floor windows have small stone balconies with cast iron railings.
The left elevation has a small central pediment. The rear elevation features a three-arch recessed loggia (now a doorway to Holmacre) and a projecting bay with a canted first floor.
