Description
The Altrincham and Dunham Massey War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1920, with an added inscription around 1945. It was designed by G. F. Armitage and is made of ashlar Portland stone. The memorial features a tall Celtic cross that rises from a stepped plinth, which is set on a wide octagonal dais. Surrounding the dais is a low wall with flights of three steps at the front and rear, each equipped with a ramped balustrade. This wall also supports stone seating along its inner face. The coping of the wall holds two flanking lanterns on slender tapered shafts, and bronze plates are embedded in the upper face, listing the names of those who fell. The cross shaft is adorned with carved interlaced decoration. On the north side of the shaft, at its base, are two inscribed bronze plaques. The lower plaque states, "THEIR GLORY SHALL NOT BE BLOTTED OUT, THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." Above it is a plaque that was moved from the south side, which reads, "ERECTED TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF ALTRINCHAM AND DUNHAM MASSEY, WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. SACRED ALSO TO THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945."
