Description
This boundary stone, dating from around 1840, marks the ancient boundary of the Anglo-Saxon Borough of Altrincham. It is a large carved stone set flush in a coursed rubble street boundary wall, with its base now below pavement level. The stone features a simple moulding along its sides and top, and has two slightly pointed arched panels on its lower half. In the spandrel at the center, there is an emblem, possibly an arrowhead, in relief beneath the word "TOWNSHIPS," which is incised in a curve. The left arched panel is inscribed with "ALTRINCHAM," while the right panel reads "DUNHAM MASSEY." The Altrincham Court Leet, which was chartered in 1290, uses this boundary stone as the starting point for their annual procession to beat the boundaries of the borough.
