Description
Nos 1, 1A and 3 Market Street and No. 2 Post Office Street are shops known as Morrison's Central Auction Galleries, built in the 1890s for Sir William Cunliffe Brooks. The building features header bond brick with stone dressings, decorative timber framing, and a clay tile roof. It has four bays on Market Street and two bays plus the Auction Hall on Post Office Street. The structure is two storeys tall with an attic and includes a curved entrance with a stone surround, a balcony above with cast iron railings and large stone brackets. The first floor showcases decorative timber framing that continues along Market Street, along with a curved four-light mullion and transom window. On the ground floor, bays one and two have two-light mullion and transom windows, while bays three and four feature two doorways and a shopfront with three-light mullion and transom windows above, plus two dormer windows above that. The Auction Hall on Post Office Street includes one eight-light and one six-light mullion and transom window, and has a hipped roof. The main roof sweeps around the corner and is topped with a weather-vane that commemorates the patron, "WCB". The building is included for its group value.
