Description
The statue of a faun with a kid and its pedestal are located approximately 75 metres north-west of the Atlas Fountain at Castle Howard. The statue, likely created in 1723 by Andrew Carpenter, depicts a faun carrying a kid on his shoulders, supported by an iron bar under the right arm. This design is based on a Roman copy from the 2nd century AD of a bronze original from the early 3rd century BC, possibly from the Pergamene school, which is now housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid. The pedestal, dating from around 1720 and probably designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, is made of sandstone and features a base adorned with relief festoons hanging from four consoles at the level of the moulded frieze.
