Description
Primrose House and No. 1 (The Cottage) is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house and flat, dated 1664 and refronted in the 18th century. It features stucco stone dressings and a stone slate roof, with three storeys and three bays. The central entrance, originally from the 17th century, was later heightened and has a moulded surround with a decorated hood displaying the date and initials IWE. All windows date from the 18th century, although some reuse 17th-century chamfered surrounds, and they all contain sash windows with glazing bars. The left-hand window on the ground and first floor has a moulded surround, while the right-hand ground floor window is a two-light mullioned window. The remaining windows are single-light. There is a left-hand gable end ridge stack.
Inside, the left room features late 18th-century panelling with fluted Doric pilasters around the fireplace. There is a semi-circular backed wall cupboard in a similar style, adorned with a Roman Doric frieze of triglyphs, guttae, and ram's skulls, along with a five-panel door. The plaster ceiling includes four rosettes, each within a circle, and two strips of bayleaf decoration. The right room has an inglenook fireplace with a segmental head made of 14 voussoirs and bead moulding, along with two stop-chamfered beams. The third floor has been converted into a separate flat known as No. 1 School Hill.
