Description

Weavers Cottage, dated 1664, was originally three cottages but is now a single dwelling. It is constructed of slobbered rubble with stone dressings and has a stone slate roof. The 17th-century section, which runs parallel to the street, is mostly obscured by a 19th-century property to the left and a projecting 18th-century wing to the right, which has a gable end facing the street. The 17th-century part is two storeys high and features one exposed bay that includes an entrance with a chamfered surround and a decorated lintel with a basket head and the date; the door was added around 1980. Above the entrance is a dripstone. To the left of the entrance is a single light chamfered window, and on the upper floor, there is a chamfered window with a round head; both windows have fixed lights. The 18th-century wing is also two storeys and has three bays. It contains a right-hand chamfered entrance that is now partially blocked to create a window with 20th-century casements. At the rear, there are two chamfered windows with cavetto mullions: three lights on the ground floor and two lights on the upper floor. The building has a central ridge stack and a stack at the right-hand gable end. Inside, to the left of the entrance, there is a stone water trough where hand loom weavers are said to have damped their yarn before working.
