Description
26 and 26A Hungate is a mid-19th century building that incorporates elements from an 18th century structure. It stands two storeys tall and is finished in stucco, featuring a moulded eaves cornice and a parapet. The façade has three windows set in moulded surrounds, with a moulded string course separating the two storeys. The ground floor showcases vermiculated rusticated quoins, two canted bay windows, and a round-headed doorway framed by a rusticated arch with a carved keystone. The entrance has a panelled door beneath a semi-circular fanlight.
The side elevation consists of coursed stone and also rises two storeys. It has two windows, one with an incised keystone and the other with a wooden lintel, both positioned above two additional windows that feature incised keystones. There is also a door with six fielded panels and a three-light rectangular fanlight, which includes an incised keystone.
This building is part of a group that includes the Forest Vale Hotel and a wall, along with Nos 1 to 7 (consecutive), 9 to 15 (consecutive), 17 to 22 (consecutive), 24 to 26 (consecutive), 26A, and No 27, of which Nos 7, 9, 10, 22, and 24 are noted for their local interest.
